THE PEMBROKE COMPANY OF ARCHERS HEREFORD INVITATION SHOOT A BRIEF REPORT This club invitation tournament was inaugurated as an 80 yard mixed Hereford recurve shoot but over the years attracting barebow, compound and longbow archers. With limited target space we try and include juniors travelling with senior archers. The entry this year was a big disappointment after the success of last year. We managed only five visitors this year from three Dyfed clubs, together with a welcome “ex pat” from Alton, compared with the twenty that represented six clubs last year. Dai Davies from Three Counties was the sole survivor! An unfortunate clash of club events and holidays decimated the faithful, we hope for better things next year. That said, we enjoyed excellent weather and were able to accommodate three shorter distance targets, for Bristol II, Bristol III and Bristol IV, and a National round in the afternoon. The Club Field Captain, Mark Summerland, kept the proceedings in good order, ensuring things moved on in good humour, making full use of his magnifying glass to judge line cutters on the way. The Ruth Cox, originally from Pembroke but now living in Hampshire and shooting with the Alton and Fourmarks club, won the Ladies Recurve Trophy, Chris Brown from Pembroke the Gents Recurve Trophy and Robyn Hall the Junior Trophy. Robyn’s score of 935 for the Bristol IV was a club and county record for the Junior Lady under 13 age group. We again saw good barebow scores at 60 and 80 yards and the junior archers excelled. Robyn achieved an excellent junior bowman score, Nathan Abrams won the junior silver medal with a score just under junior bowman and Jess Hackett achieved a good 2nd class score. James Armstrong won the “Best Gold” medal at the longest distance in the applicable round and shot a third class round. Both Jess and James have recently joined the club and bravely took on the 12 dozen round, as did new lady archers Sue Davies and Ann Hackett, shooting the Bristol III round. For the first time for several years there were no compound shooters There were five scores which appear to be good Dyfed county record claims, subject to claiming and verification: - Stuart Edwards – Gents Longbow Hereford, Victoria Kalmaru - Ladies Barebow Bristol II, Mal Williams – Gents Barebow Bristol II, Jess Hackett - Junior Girl U16 Recurve Bristol IV and Robyn Hall Junior Girl U13 Recurve Bristol IV. Thanks all members in field preparation and set up, including those not there on the day. Special thanks to Phil and George, (now 88), for keeping the scoring and leader board up to date instead of joining the shoot. Finally thanks to all who attended and helped make an enjoyable shoot for everyone, spread the word that the sun always shines on the Pembroke Shoot (well mostly!) and we look forward to a full shoot next year. With best regards Chris Brown Pembroke Company of Archers Club Secretary. |
