A BRIEF REPORT
There was an excellent entry for our 50th Club Anniversary Hereford Invitation shoot which meant that we were forced to make an early decision not to include any Bristol Rounds this year. There were enough Hereford entries to fill the maximum target space before the closing date. Particular apologies to those juniors we couldn’t accommodate this year. Eight clubs were represented, seven from the Dyfed County. Ladies and Gents shot in the four recognised GNAS tournament bow styles of Recurve, Barebow, Longbow and Compound Unlimited. Unavoidable, last minute cancellations on the day meant that that the field was not quite full. In spite of a doubtful forecast, the early morning showers cleared in time for the field to be set up and we enjoyed a dry day. A strong wind seemed to cause little problems for most archers on our sheltered field. Dave Hall, our club chairman, officiated, supported at the target, by assistant Field Captain, Dave Cochlin. Shooting was of a good standard. The gents recurve trophy was won by Dave Cochlin with a score of 1014. Second and third places also scored over 1000 points. Ruth Cox, now shooting for Neath Archers, returned to successfully defend her Ladies title with a winning score of 914. Sue Brown won the barebow gold medal, changing from recurve shooting this season. Jeremy Phillips' compound unlimited score of 1228 equalled the second highest score shot on the field in the history of the competition. This being achieved in his first season shooting since changing to this bow style. Gina Morris of 3 Counties Inclusive Archers, shooting her first outdoor season, won the ladies compound unlimited medal, continuing in spite of a wasp sting to her shooting hand at full draw. Stuart Edwards, shooting longbow, coped well in the wind, just missing his existing county record score. Pembroke Junior, Nathan Abrams, just 14 and now starting to shoot the under 16 age group, (60 yard distance), took advantage of a late cancellation to shoot his first Hereford, 80 yard round. He scored a creditable first class recurve round of 667 - well on the way to a junior bowman classification. There were two scores which appear to be good Dyfed county record claims, subject to claiming and verification: - Marek Pawlic (Fort Archers) - Gents Barebow 832 Jeremy Phillips (Fort Archers) - Gents unlimited Compound 1228 Thanks to Lord Paramount, Ron Gerrard, for presenting the awards. Ron has been a member and officer of the club for over 40 of its 50 year existence, usually shooting twice a week winter and summer. The efforts of the club members in field preparation before the day and work at the shoot were greatly appreciated. As were the donated raffle prizes. Thanks to Philip Harris for organising the scoring, leader board and producing the result, (ably supported by Robyn Hall and Simon Burgess). Robyn, Jemma and Bethan did an excellent job smiling sweetly at the assembled throng to sell a record number of raffle tickets! Finally thanks to all who attended and helped make an enjoyable shoot for everyone. All Pembroke club members really appreciate this year’s support for the event. We all look forward to seeing you again next year, early entries welcome, a £5.00 deposit secures your space! With regards, Chris Brown Pembroke Company of Archers Club Secretary. |
