Thoughts of Pop
What will we remember most?
| Margaret,
the eldest of the family, has lived next door to Pop for over forty years
and remembers the wonderful holidays that they had together. She
went with him as companion and carer to assist him with some of his
personal tasks, especially putting on his "Nora Batty" type
stockings. Everyone took a turn at this chore. Trevor had this
task last Tuesday morning. The event will be remembered for the unrepeatable simile that Trevor made as he rolled on Pop's stockings! In 1993 Pop chose a tour of Cornwall. During a visit to Truro, he was very pleased to be able to meet Ben, just three months old, who was great grandchild number 5. Over the next five years or so Margaret and he enjoyed super holidays to the Scottish Highlands, Yorkshire, Devon and South Wales where he had an amusing encounter with a certain very buxom Welsh lady called Jemima his "kissogram". During this time the number of great grandchildren grew to nine. He loved visiting his friends Bill and Ce in The Lake District. He made many good friends at their hotel. They all enjoyed his company, his quips and jokes. |
| The highlight of most years was the collective birthday celebrations of Bill, David and Pop. All shared the 14th of January as their birthday and this year they were 207 years old. There was a time when they wondered if they would get to the two hundred mark. But it wasn't Pop making it to ninety that they were worried about! That 90th birthday had many parties. One in Keswick, one in Markyate with almost all of the family, and several in various family homes! Birthdays were important to Pop. He never forgot a birthday and enjoyed sharing them whenever he could.
