| Janet recalls the war years and the blitz. Barnet was being bombed - the windows and doors were blown out and ceilings came down. She remembers being comforted by him and their mother. He was the family protector.
He was a strict father but he mellowed with age and the new generation saw him as a big softie:- " Our Poppy." Janet was perhaps a little bit afraid of him as a child and in her teens, woe betide her if she was late home from youth club or if she selfishly took too much hot water for a bath! Talking of baths, everyone remembers how the bathroom was often out of service because he was using it for enlarging his photographs. It even happened when cousins Edna and Karl were staying once and were unable to have a bath. Edna reminded Pop of this only a couple of weeks before. Pop always loved photography. He captured many family occasions and holidays on his cine camera and enjoyed showing them to his family over the years. Kevin remembers the cine films with some embarrassment! Only last Saturday Pop was looking at and admiring Alex's new camera and holiday photos. |
