He was a very resourceful and practical man. He could turn his hand to anything. He was butcher, baker, cobbler, toy-maker, bike repairman, painter and decorator, carpenter and wood turner, grocer and provision merchant. He won a silver medal for his bacon cutting in the nineteen thirties. Today, in the twenty-first century, he was amazed at the powers of the Internet and home computers that could send emails and pictures all round the world in seconds. "Where's it going to end?" he would say.

| He was a marvellous cook - it was his passion. At 92, still independent, he was cooking his own meals (including at least 5 veg.) baking his own bread, cakes of all sorts. Caroline, Viv and Robyn all loved his chocolate flapjacks that he made, especially for them. Ben, now age seven remembers seeing Pop when he visited Barnet and says he had a lovely drink and a rock cake - "I might have had two," he recalls, "as they were really lovely. " Steve also had a passion for Pop's rock cakes and would call in, just for them. Pop would make marmalade. One year he made over one hundredweight! Bob has since said. "Who is going to make our mince pies and Christmas puddings now?" | ![]() |
